As part of our ongoing professional development program,
Marketing Breakthroughs' staff has attended several web marketing and search engine
optimization events and seminars hosted by OCRI (Ottawa Centre
for Research and Innovation), Zone 5ive, and the WAA (Web
Analytics Association).
First, on February 7, 2008, the MB team attended a web analytics
and web marketing seminar held by the WAA in downtown Ottawa. This
event featured Jim Sterne, founder of the Web Analytics
Association.
This seminar highlighted the fact that "web analytics" is quickly
turning into "marketing optimization". That is, it's not enough to
just look at the numbers a website is generating -- you have to
know how to best utilize those numbers in order to launch the right
marketing initiatives that will capitalize on the strengths and
correct the weaknesses found in the analytics.
The seminar also touched on the fact that web marketing companies
shouldn't always be writing based on their own opinion of what a
website should be -- on the contrary, websites should be built
specifically based on the target audience's goals and expectations
for the site.
Then, on February 14, 2008, MB attended an event hosted by OCRI
and featuring Chris Biber (President of SearchingWorks), which
focused on tips and strategies for conducting Google Adwords
campaigns. Among other things, the seminar highlighted the
importance of testing multiple versions of Google ads and the fact
that Google tracks everything (including bounce rates) when ranking
your pay-per-click ad. This means
that the copy written for the ad must not be misleading and the
site the ad links to must be exactly what the web user is looking
for.
